Climate change only exacerbates. Can we look to Macao’s past to find a solution?

Overview

The effects of climate change involve all aspects of people's lives, production, and the natural environment. These impacts include, but are not limited to, sea level rise, increased frequency of extreme weather, changes in ecosystems and loss of biodiversity, etc. Climate change also poses significant negative impacts on culture and heritage. The UNESCO publication “World Heritage and Tourism in a Changing Climate” highlights that climate change has become one of the most pressing threats to World Heritage. It not only causes physical damage to culture and heritage, but also negatively affects heritage’s value, authenticity, and integrity.

Located on the southeast coast of the Asian continent, Macao belongs to the subtropical maritime monsoon climate, with sufficient heat and water vapor, high temperature, and rainy climate characteristics. Macao has experienced continuous impacts from climate change throughout history. According to the Macao Meteorological Bureau, from 1952 to 2020, the average temperature in Macao has risen at an average rate of 0.09°C per decade. Climate change not only causes warming in Macao, but also leads to an increase in the frequency of extreme weather (e.g. heavy rainfall, typhoons, etc.) and poses negative impacts such as sea level rise.

Wind and rain nurture the “lotus” (Macao), and the “lotus” responds to wind and rain. The climate of Macao has nurtured its residents and their culture, and the negative impacts of climate change have given rise to the wisdom of Macao residents to respond to protect their culture and heritage, and reveal their cultural resilience. Ultimately, it contributes to cultural sustainability and vitality in response to climate change. We will explore the local wisdom of Macao residents in coping with climate change from the following six perspectives of cultural heritage.
