Life and death practices include different use of traditional Chinese medicine and the evolution of various clothing styles. The change and development of them both reflect the wisdom of Macao residents. In addition, some ceremonies or practices related to burial, confinement in childbirth and Taoism also represent people’s changing perceptions of birth and death in Macao. They are all part of an inseparable element of Macao’s cultural heritage. In recent years, Macao has been conducting more and more research into Chinese herbal medicine and has established a large number of local research institutes and pharmaceutical factories. Different styles of clothing shops can also be found in Macao everywhere. The evolution of styles and materials of clothes, as well as the changing ceremonies and practices on fishing boats or those for birth and death are all epitomes of the overall changing perceptions, beliefs and customs of the local communities in Macao.
In the context of climate change, Macao residents may contract different diseases under different climatic conditions, for example, more likely to get rheumatism in wet weather. Meanwhile, climate changes and weather conditions can also affect the way medicines are stored and used. In addition, residents' dressing habits and choice of fabrics are also inextricably linked to the climate. Besides, those birth and death related ceremonies, as well as a series of Taoist practices held on the fishing-boats all originated from the characteristics of some specific climates and the corresponding symbolism or beliefs behind them. Furthermore, climate change also relates to Feng Shui, therefore, Chinese graves are generally positioned facing the ocean, as this is thought to give greater or the Chinese belief in environmental harmony.
Story Line
The story is based on the process and development of life and death in Macao. The fishermen had great danger during long-term fishing in the past, thus they usually sought for useful medicines and comfortable clothes to cope with the risks or threats resulting from the climate change on the sea. In this way, their safety could be guaranteed in next fishing trip. However, no matter how the technology and medical condition improves with the development of society in Macao, nobody could avoid death in reality.
