Traditional Festivals and Craftsmanship

In Macao, many residents' handicrafts, rituals and festivals are considered as intangible cultural heritage (ICH). They reflect and refer to residents’ traditional practice and religious expressions. Climate change might cause negative and irreversible effects to the places and tools used in specific rituals and festivals as well as the materials used for specific craftsmanship.

On one hand, climate change is impacting traditional solar terms and festivals in Macao, such as the Insect Awakening Day.The current characteristics of the solar term are inconsistent with those of the traditional Insect Awakening Day. Meanwhile, it also led to a decrease in the pH value of water during the Dragon Boat Festival, which can impact aquatic organisms and lead to red tide, preventing residents from participating in traditional rituals. The winter solstice, a traditional festival, is becoming warmer due to global temperature increases.

On the other hand, extreme weather could cause delay or cancellation of the rituals and festivals which should be held on the date decided based on the traditions. Moreover, the sea level rise could harm the places and buildings that used to hold the rituals due to water logging, for example, Sin Fong Temple which is located near Travessa de Coelho do Amaral. It might also be harmful to the living environment of specific species and decrease the yields of some materials such as timbers from rare species of trees. The affected traditional handicrafts in Macao are “Manufacture of Incense Sticks” (Veng Heng Cheong Joss-stick Shop) and “Woodwork – Religious Figure Carving” (Tai Cheong Wood Engraving). Ultimately, these negative impacts could be detrimental to the values of ICH.

Facing extreme weather, the practitioners of ICH did any specific measure to confront the negative impacts. For instance, Tai Cheong Wood Engraving selects superior wooden material “teakwood” to engrave figure carving. Teakwood has the characteristic of dampproofing. Then, craftsmen polished, lacquered, and finally coated with gold leaf. The gold leaf has the function of expelling insects. Meanwhile, the wood-assembling technique is favored over traditional one-piece woodcarving for its longevity in response to heavy rain and scorching sun on the sea. In addition, the materials used to make incense include bamboo silk, cypress, agilawood, white sandalwood, and rose, all of which have insect repellent properties.

From the perspective of human consciousness and cognition, as the ICH in Macao, “Daan” is believed to eliminate disasters since the worshippers pray in the “Daan”. It could be a way to improve public environmental awareness. Besides, religion could be an important resource to improve the risks of climate change and promote an environmentally-friendly lifestyle. Because religious practitioners and religious leaders have a potentially important role to play in the conservation of nature. Although Macao has found no similar examples so far, hopes to introduce these ideas in the future. Therefore, the government and NGOs could provide more workshops of ICH to promote these rituals and related craftsmanship, and the residents could learn through actively by joining those events.
