Woodwork-Macao Religious Figure Carving

Macao religious figure carving has a rich history that can be traced back to the religious beliefs of fishermen and the local community. The craft has gone through various phases of development, from simple wooden figures to large figures of Buddha, and has incorporated techniques from other places. Religious figure carving is a technically demanding craft that involves design, material selection, carving, assembling, polishing, base-plastering, linen-pasting, base-lacquering, line-lacquering, gold-leafing, and colouring. The craft incorporates local wisdom to address climate change, such as selecting materials with insect-repellent characteristics and using an assembled wood carving technique to ensure a longer life for keeping. Additional processing includes polishing, lacquering, and applying gold leafing to create a dazzling magnificence for the religious figures. Religious figure carving is an important part of Macao's intangible cultural heritage and has been inscribed on the National Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
