Perceived weather change inconsistent with traditional solar terms
The ‘Insect Awakening Day’ is one of the 24 solar terms, falling on the 5th or 6th day of the third lunar month. It is the time when the weather warms and insects become active. Macao residents usually take offerings to temples or to the public ‘Tou Tei Street’ altars to worship the white tiger on the ‘Insect Awakening Day’, that is known as ‘Sacrifice Offering to the White Tiger on Insect Awakening Day’. A white tiger is considered the king of animals and can ward off pests, according to legend. Besides, white tigers are believed to bring peace and safety to people, protect them from disease and bad luck, and prevent disasters and solve difficulties. However, climate change may influence the current weather conditions and is inconsistent with traditional solar terms : the ‘Insect Awakening Day’. It is possible that the weather became warmer earlier than the traditional solar terms indicated. Residents may get confused about such inconsistencies. It noteworthy that traditional solar terms will lose their own function.

Climate change led to a decrease in the pH value of water bodies during dragon boat festival
Dragon Boat Festival is the 5th day of the fifth lunar month. The festival activities usually include dragon boat race, eating sticky rice dumpling, swimming activities, etc. The salinity of seawater decreases in May every year, which is a popular swimming activity for Macao people, which is considered good for health. However, climate change has led to a decrease in the pH value of water, most notably due to typhoons that bring pollutants to water. The decrease in water pH results in less oxygen and more bacteria, which is detrimental to the growth of aquatic organisms. Besides, the decrease in water pH value will make the sea more pronounced to red tide, that is the number of red tide at two Macao beaches have increased compared to 2020. There is a need to be warned that swimming in a red tide will have the potential to irritate the skin and eyes and cause allergies. Thus it prevents Macao residents from practicing their customary activities during the Dragon Boat Festival.
Winter Solstice
冬至
The winter solstice is a natural occurrence that happens every year on the shortest day and longest night in the Northern Hemisphere, usually around December 21st. As one of the 24 solar terms, ‘winter solstice’, the ancient people named it as the second Chinese New Year, usually eat dumplings symbolizing reunion with friends and relatives, also represents an increase of one year, winter solstice is also the longest day of the year, and winter solstice there is a legend is that if the winter solstice day is a good sunny day, the Lunar New Year will rain, which is the proverbial ‘dry winter solstice, wet New Year’. However, according to climate observation, the global temperature is increasing and the winter solstice is gradually becoming a day that is not the coldest of the year. Further analysis of the long-term trend of the maximum and minimum temperatures on the winter solstice also shows that the difference between day and night temperatures has become smaller, and the minimum temperature on the winter solstice is significantly warmer. Therefore, the wisdom of the ancients on the winter solstice prediction is still only for reference, needing to combine scientific technology and other weather forecasts on the winter solstice temperature prediction, so as to make planning arrangements for food storage actions.
