Raw materials for ships are an important element in shipbuilding, as wooden ships cannot be made without raw materials. The first step in building a wooden boat is choosing the wood. However, due to rising temperatures, precious trees such as camphor trees cannot adapt to the climate and are difficult to grow, or extreme weather such as storms has damaged these rare woods. This leads to an increase in the cost of raw wood, which is increasingly expensive. Therefore, shipbuilders can only switch to other woods when selecting raw materials. For example: Macao’s shipbuilding industry relies heavily on local fishermen to order ships. In the past, camphor wood was used as wood because it is extremely hard. However, due to the impact of climate change, the wood is difficult to grow and the cost is high. Therefore, the lack of camphor wood made it difficult to find a substitute with the same function, so the members of the Associação de Auxílio Mútuo de Pescadores de Macau finally changed to use cheaper wood-Tipuana wood.

Through mutual exchanges and research. But despite this, climate changes eventually lead to the loss of authenticity of the raw materials from which wooden boats are made. Nowadays, the problem of climate change is becoming more and more serious, and the protection of rare wood is an urgent problem that human beings need to solve. Protecting wood is not only to preserve rare species, but also to inherit human shipbuilding culture.
