The belief of the shipbuilding industry
The shipbuilding industry in Macao has been affected by climate change, with extreme weather posing significant threats to those at sea and shipbuilders. In addition to practical solutions, people turn to religious practices for emotional and psychological support. Deities like A-Ma, Reclining Buddha, and Tai Sui are believed to protect seafarers and bring good fortune. Historically, seafarers have performed religious ceremonies before voyages, but modern regulations now limit worship to authorized locations. Annual events like the Jiao ritual, which seeks divine protection and well-being, have been discontinued due to the pandemic and lack of financial support. Moreover, shipbuilders in Macao revere Lu ban, a deity of the "three trades": masonry, woodworking, and shipbuilding. Climate change affects the shipbuilding process and is threatened, so that the shipbuilders will worship Luban to pray for smooth sailing during the shipbuilding period. Therefore, Luban is a group of beliefs in the hearts of Macao shipbuilders, which can create shipbuilding ideas for them and bless them with peace.
